How to Play Safeties in Pool
Pool is not only about making balls. When you have no good shot, the smart play is often a safety: a defensive shot that leaves your opponent with no good shot either. Learning to play safeties turns you from a hopeful gambler into a player who wins games by controlling the table.
When to play a safety
Play a safety when your shot at a makeable ball is low percentage, when running out is unrealistic, or when a defensive position gives you a better chance to win than a risky pot. In games like eight-ball and nine-ball, a well-timed safety can flip control of the rack in your favor.
Good players are always weighing offense against defense. If the pot is risky and a miss would leave your opponent an easy runout, the safety is often the higher-value choice even when a shot technically exists.
The goal: hide the cue ball
The strongest safety leaves your opponent with no clear path to their ball. Ideally you snooker them, tucking the cue ball behind a blocker so they cannot see the ball they must hit. Short of that, aim to leave the object ball far from the cue ball, tight to a rail, or at an awkward angle.
Think about both balls at once: where the cue ball ends up and where the object ball ends up. A safety that hides the cue ball but leaves their ball hanging over a pocket has done only half the job.
Speed and cue ball control
Safeties live and die on speed control. Most defensive shots are soft, rolling the cue ball to a chosen resting spot behind cover. Practice lagging the cue ball to precise distances so you can stop it exactly where you want, whether that is frozen behind a cluster or nestled against a cushion.
Use follow, draw, and gentle english to steer the cue ball to its hiding place after it grazes the object ball. Often the ideal contact is thin, just enough to move the object ball a touch while the cue ball drifts to safety.

A safety only helps if it is legal. In most games you must contact your own ball (or the correct ball) first and then either pocket a ball or drive a ball to a rail. A brilliant hiding spot is worthless if it comes with a foul that hands ball-in-hand to your opponent.
Before you shoot, confirm you can make a clean legal contact. When you are being safed against, look for a way to escape legally, such as a rail-first kick shot, rather than risking a foul. Defense is a two-way battle of position.
